Since moving to Maine, my family and I have been on a journey of exploring our state's natural beauty. Our love for adventure combined with a need for peace and inspiration has led us to cover hundreds of miles, immersing ourselves in all the diverse landscapes that Maine has to offer.

From scaling mountains to scrambling over coastal rocks, ferrying to remote islands, climbing rugged cliffs, and swimming in freezing waterfalls, we've done it all with our young children, 7 and 2, in tow. The Boothbay Harbor Region
The Boothbay Harbor region of Maine is a truly unique and beautiful destination. Located on the Mid-Coast of Maine, the region boasts breathtaking scenery, a rich history, and a vibrant culture. With its stunning rocky coastline, charming fishing village, and abundant wildlife, the Boothbay Harbor region is the perfect place for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. What do I love about the Boothbay Region?
It’s a quintessential Maine village that still boasts a strong lobsterman and fishing community.
It’s home to many in my husband’s family and where his father grew up. One of his great uncles was even the Burnt Island Lighthouse keeper!
The many places to hike or explore - Ovens Mouth, Porters Preserve, Ocean Point, Hendricks Head - will give you a taste of coastal Maine that will keep you coming back for years to come.
Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
The Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol, Maine is a beloved landmark that is treasured by visitors and locals alike. Perched on a rocky peninsula overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the lighthouse offers breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline, Monhegan Island, and the horizon beyond. Built in 1835, the lighthouse has been guiding mariners safely to shore for over a century and a half. Today, the lighthouse is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. What do I love about Pemaquid?
There are so many quiet places on the rocks to sit and take in the waves and the view even if the park is busy.
The textured rocks that lead down to the crashing waves are so interesting and unique! You will find quartz, pegmatite, feldspar, igneous, and metamorphic rocks crisscrossing the point!
It is a beautiful location in every season. I have visited in hurricanes (to see the massive waves), freezing wind chills, thick fog, and hot summer days and have never regretted a single trip!
Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is a stunning natural wonder that is loved by visitors from all over the world. The park covers over 47,000 acres of diverse landscapes, including mountains, lakes, forests, and coastline. Visitors to the park can explore its many hiking trails, scenic drives, and historic landmarks; including Schoodic Peninsula, a breathtaking spot that offers an often less trafficked version of Acadia. Whether you're looking for a challenging hike or a peaceful stroll, Acadia National Park has something for everyone.
What do I love about Acadia?
The fresh pine smell, the ocean colors that change with the light, and the waves that roll in from the often stormy Atlantic.
Schoodic Point - a quieter and more peaceful portion of the park. I have hiked here and climbed over the granite shoreline for hours.
The reddish orange rocks near Thunder Hole is an unforgettable piece of the coastline.
Visiting Bass Harbor Light, I love seeing it perch from its spot above the ocean. This historic lighthouse is a treasured Maine landmark.
Reid State Park
Reid State Park is an area that draws hundreds of people each day in the summer. The park features over two miles of sandy beaches, rolling dunes, and scenery that is sure to take your breath away. If you're looking to relax on the beach, explore the park's many hiking trails, or simply take in the stunning views, Reid State Park has something for everyone. In addition to its natural beauty, the park is also home to a rich variety of wildlife, including seals, ospreys, and a host of bird species. Whether you're an avid hiker, a wildlife enthusiast, or simply someone who loves the beach, Reid State Park is a must on your list of places to visit in Maine.
What do I love most about Reid State Park?
I love how diverse the shoreline is, you can walk on the rocky shoreline, tall cliffs, or the sand beach for over a mile.
It’s an absolutely great place to bring your family of all ages. The kids can play in the sand while grandma can watch for birds from a wooden swing bench!
You have views of Southport Island, Seguin Island Light, and the open Atlantic Ocean.
Popham Beach
Popham Beach in Maine is a beloved coastal beach that sits on the mouth of the Kennebec River and boasts over a mile of soft, sandy shoreline and crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and other water activities. In addition to its natural beauty, Popham Beach is also home to several historic sites, including the remains of a 19th-century fort, making it a popular destination for history buffs and culture enthusiasts.
What do I love most about Popham Beach?
There is so much to discover here! The shoreline changes depending on the tide, allowing you to climb up Fox Island or just explore the tide pools and tidal channels draining out into the ocean.
The fort sits outside the state park and is an interesting place to visit, from there you can walk along the beach for nearly three miles.
Views of Seguin Island Light, Fox Island, Pond Island Lighthouse and occasionally you may even see a Navy battleship heading up the Kennebec River to Bath Iron Works.
There are so many other areas that I love to visit in Maine, it was hard to choose just five!
