Monhegan Legacy - Oil on Canvas - 8 x 10
You won’t hear a landscape artist say this often about their work, but this painting doesn’t begin to capture the beauty of Monhegan Island.
It doesn’t show some of the tallest cliffs along the Atlantic coast, or some of the best views you have ever laid eyes upon as you are perched on top of a cliff with thousands of nesting gulls. But when I saw this fishing boat named “Legacy” floating in the harbor I thought that there was no better way to honor this secluded island. For the past several centuries, it has been a hardworking fishing village which still continues to this day. Artists have also been drawn to the grandeur of this island, and it has been the part time home of many artists such as Edward Hopper, Robert Henri, Rockwell Kent, George Bellows, and Jamie Wyeth (who is perhaps the most associated with the island and still resides there part time). Monhegan is an island of legacy, and honors both the artists and fishermen who have made this place their home. But no, this painting doesn’t truly capture the spirit of the island—but keep an eye out for my next Monhegan painting if you want to see it’s magnificence!
